Bastian Schweinsteiger was delighted to return to Manchester United training on Monday – but the club are still hoping to sell him.

The German made a surprise return at Carrington having been exiled by boss Jose Mourinho all season.

It remains to be seen if Schweinsteiger will be back in match action any time soon with United struggling for form in recent weeks.

He took to Twitter to express his delight at being back in training alongside his team-mates.

The 32-year-old has been training alone since the summer and is yet to feature for United under Mourinho, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Despite his surprise recall, he will not be able to play in Turkey after he was omitted from Mourinho’s Europa League squad. And it is understood United are still keen to offload the World Cup winner.

A move to America remains most likely when the MLS transfer window reopens following the play-offs on December 11.

Schweinsteiger, who is under contract until 2018, is still eligible to play in the Premier League after being named in the squad for domestic games.

However, he was categorised as a player ‘no longer considered a member of the first-team playing squad’ when United released their fourth quarter financial results last month.

The results showed the club were willing to write off his £6.7m transfer fee from Bayern Munich as ‘an exceptional cost’.

Luke Shaw was among the players training with Schweinsteiger on Monday and the defender said he was happy to see the former German international back.

He said: “It’s great to see him back. We found out the news a couple of days ago and it’s so great to have him back.

“He’s a big influence in the dressing room and obviously on the pitch, especially for the young players like myself.

“It’s a great boost for us, the experience and the quality that he brings. The quality he possesses is a boost for our team and I’m so glad to have him back.”
